Red cowgirl boots and a blue suit??? Why not! I love it when couples aren’t afraid to do things a little bit different… Adding personal touches to your celebration that speak to who you are as individuals and to who you are as a couple is a great way to make your celebration special and uniquely you! I was so excited when I saw Betsy’s red boots and hair flowers and Josh’s blue pinstripe suit–they were perfect compliments to the gorgeous fall colors at their October celebration.
There are no rules for weddings, at least not any that are set in stone. Yes, there are certainly some beautiful rituals and traditions, but there are plenty of dated ones as well. My personal philosophy is that you should keep the traditions that are meaningful to you and modify or do away with the ones that aren’t. Betsy and Josh were a local Wyoming couple (they actually live inside Grand Teton National Park!) and they chose to incorporate a whiskey toast into their ceremony after their vows… I had never seen that before and it totally worked because it fit them! (Wyoming folks love their whiskey :-)
If you have a great photograph of your parents cutting their three-tired cake on their wedding day thirty-five years ago that you have have always cherished, then absolutely work with a cake designer to make a similar one. I had a bride this past June who had an image she loved of her parents that we tried to recreate of them signing their wedding certificate on the hood of a car (both she and her parents had outdoor ceremonies in national parks :-)
But if neither you or your fiancé like cake, there is nothing that says that you have to have cake at your wedding (or even cut something for that matter!) I have seen everything from pie tables to ice cream machines to little bags of candied popcorn that were arranged on a cake stand (the couple getting married had bonded over and were movie lovers)… The most important thing to remember is that your wedding day is about you and you can make your own rules!
